Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

I ran a 5k this morning as a tune up of sorts for the St. George Marathon next Saturday.  I ran about a 5.5 mile warm-up, followed by the race and a cool down to finish up with 12 miles for the day.

The race went well.  The course is super slow as it has some nasty hills in it.  The race was a battle of the genders up at the front as the women had 3:00 subtracted from their times in order to compete for prizes.  I knew that I had no chance of putting 3:00 on Lindsay Dunkley, but I wanted to see how big of a gap I could put on her.  Anyhow, I started off running hard, and I went through the mile in 4:58.  I continued to push during the second mile and I ran a 5:04 (10:02 for 2 miles).  During the third mile my lack of 5k training took its toll as I started to get a side cramp, and I began to have trouble pushing myself and I slowed considerably, running a 5:20 (15:22 for 3 miles).  I finished in 15:54 to cross the line as the first finisher.  Lindsay finished 1:27 behind me to take first place.  I think that for future races of this nature that a 2:00 gap would be better than 3:00.  It would not have changed the outcome of the race at all, but I think that 3:00 is an unfair handicap for the men.  Anyhow, I think that after St. George I want to try and improve my 5k speed.  I need to get faster at that distance if I want to run faster at longer distances.

I agree that 3:00 is too large for the top competitors. Still a nice tune up race. Good luck in st. g.

Good race yesterday and yes, seriously nasty hills which just made the course so slow. I agree, 2 minutes would be a fairer gap. Good luck next weekend!

This is an interesting question as to what gap is fair. Going off world record we have 12:37 vs 14:11. So 1:34, or 0.89 ratio. The same ratio gives you 1:51 if the man runs 15:00, 1:59 for 16:00, and 2:06 for 17:00.

However, taking a fairly competitive and representative race such as Minuteman 5 K (results at http://www.usatf.org/assoc/ut/mm-2009.htm) this year we have the following times:

Men: 15:19, 15:36, 16:04, 16:13, 16:46, 16:49, 17:09, 17:13, 18:00

Women: 18:27, 18:43, 19:12, 19:34, 21:15, 21:17, 22:15, 22:24, 22:40, 22:48.

Every single position in the women's is more than 3:00 behind the matching position in the men's. Which means if we allow only 2:00 gap nobody except Lindsey will ever see a whole lot of prize money. Even with 3:00, once enough guys deem the prize worthwhile, we will not often see a woman win anything in those types of races.
