Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

I ran with Anita in the stroller not realizing that she hadn't eaten in a while.  This ended in disaster as Kimia had left to go to the grocery store while I ran with the baby, so when I realized that Anita was hungry I couldn't just take her home to get fed.  I kept her mostly happy until I had been out about 3.5 miles, at which point she started getting pretty upset.  So, at 4 miles I stopped at a park thinking that if I could get her some water in her belly maybe she would at least be happy enough to get home, and hopefully Kimia would get back by the time I did.  This didn't work at all, as the baby just ended up getting wet, which made her cold, which made her more upset.  So, I ran fairly quickly back home with the baby.  I took off her wet coat and wrapped her in my shirt to keep her warm until we got there, and we arrived home just as Kimia got back.  She then took Anita and fed her, and everything was fine, but my run had been cut short, and at this point I didn't have the time to run any farther.  Finished just over 1:00:00 for 8 miles (maybe 61 or 62 min, but not sure because I didn't get my watch stopped).

I ran to school this morning, and ran 2 x 2 "mile" repeats.  The first was probably actually pretty close to 2 miles and I had approximate mile splits of 5:33 (into the wind) and 5:25 (cross-wind).  The second 2 mile split was short, but I imagine that I probably averaged about 5:15 pace (actual splits of 5:01, 5:02).  Total time of 55:10 for 8.6 miles.

PM: I came home a little faster than normal, but I did not run any parts of it particularly hard.  Total time of 1:01:21.

I ran to school this morning in 1:05:17 for 8.6 miles.  I kept the pace slow until I got onto Tropicana, at which point I picked up the pace to about 7:00 because I was "racing" the bus.  This lasted for a little over a mile until I turned into a parking lot at the university (by the way, I did beat the bus).

PM: I ran 5.1 miles home, at which point Kimia picked me up.  Kept the pace easy (right around 8:00 pace)

I ran too and from school today.  1:03:41 on the way too school, and 1:06:31 on the way home.  I kept the pace easy both ways, other than the occasional pick-up to get through a stop light before it turned red.

I don't know what it is, but I have been feeling really tired lately.  It was more of the same this morning, and I didn't get up early enough to run before I headed off to school.  It also didn't help that I had an upset stomach, which gave me less motivation to get out the door this morning.  I ran after I got home, but didn't have enough time to get in a full 10 before I needed to pick up Kimia from her new job, so I ran as long as I could and ended up with 6.75.

Today's run was supposed to be an out and back 20 miler on the mid mountain trail (a 34 mile loop near Henderson, Boulder City, and Lake Mead) with a 10 mile tempo during the second half.  Temps were a little warm at the start (high 70's) but not unbearable, and I felt comfortable throughout the majority of the first half.  I ended up turning around a little early on accident, because I miscounted the mile markers, so I ended up turning around at about 9.7 miles.

Once I turned around I began my tempo.  What I didn't know before coming here is that in the direction I was heading there was a mild uphill or rolling for most of the first 6 miles, followed by 1 steeper uphill mile, and then 3 miles that felt like you were getting dropped off of a cliff.  So, I began my tempo heading up a huge hill, just as the heat was starting to get to me.  Temps were in the upper 80's, and maybe even as high as 90, and there was absolutely zero shade, and I was running up a hill so steep that I was struggling to break 7:00 pace in some parts, and was never going faster than about 6:20-6:30 pace.  This lasted for what I will call 3.1 miles, at which point I got to run 1 mile downhill, and then another half mile semi-flat but still downhill.  At this point I was feeling terrible (hot, dehydrated, tired) and I decided to cut my tempo short.  Total time of 30:09 for 4.6 miles.

At this point I wanted to get some water, however I couldn't find the water fountains I thought were close to the trail.  I could tell I was overheating, so I slowed down even more hoping that I would be able to manage my body temps better while running slower.  This didn't work, so I started looking for someone that I could get water from.  I eventually got some water from a guy out with his dog, but the water was warm, and I had overheated enough at this point that I still didn't feel good after getting a small drink.  I stopped a couple minutes later and walked for a bit, hoping that my body would get temps under control if I didn't run.  This worked a little better, and after walking for about .4 miles I ran the rest of the way to my starting point.  Total running time for what ended up being 19 miles was 2:22:0X.  After finishing I got some water, and put my head in the bathroom sink to try and cool off.  I picked up some orange juice at the store and drank a lot of that as well.
