Personal:

I used to run competitively, and maybe I will do so again someday.  Right now I am primarily running to try and get in better shape, and to maintain both physical and emotional health, but also for the simple joy that comes when I run.

I am also the proud daddy of five little ones.  I love the opportunity that I have to be a daddy, and my challenge is to balance my family responsibilities with work and running.

I performed the stress test and echo today.  The test went well.  I will count it as 2 miles because I was going for about 19 minutes, but I honestly don't know the distance (and I am sure it was actually shorter but the effort seems about right).

I found out that I have acute pericarditis.  So basically, I have some fluid buildup around my heart which appears to have been caused by the illness I had earlier this year (end of May).  Apparently it was an added stressor on my system for the last few months, and eventually my body could no longer handle the stress.  I need to take large doses of ibuprofen to try and get rid of the fluid, and if that doesn't work there are other things to try.

The good thing is that I don't have any heart problems.  Heart function is fine.  There was some minor tricuspid prolapse (backflow of blood into the atria), but evidently 80% of people have that to a very minor degree and I don't need to worry about that.

Glad to hear you have an answer to the issue that was plaguing you and you have treatment options to get it resolved. Prayers are answered!

Interesting. I suppose that explains a lot of things. You can now brag that you've run a 2:40 marathon with acute pericarditis. It is also a testimony to how well a strong heart of a trained athlete can mask a problem. It is very fortunate that the technology has advanced enough to where your problem was exposed.

I did a quick search and found this:

http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/pericarditis-000126.htm

It recommends garlic and hawthorn among other things as general heart strengtheners on top of ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen is a blood thinner as I understand. I wonder how it affects the oxygen transport capability of the blood, and if anything needs to be done to counterbalance it.

The thoughts I had on the training to recover. Keep the daily mileage even and consistent. So if you find that going 8 knocks you out for two days, go 4 or even 3, find something that you can do daily and recover from.
